Florence Scarinci
Dog writer, cat writer, reviewer

Florence Scarinci, dog writer, cat writerFlorence Scarinci became a librarian shortly after the invention of moveable type. She loves her career, but her real passion is dogs and cats. In addition to her degree in Library Science, she has earned a certificate in Animal Care. She has worked as a veterinary assistant, trained service dogs, and owned and operated a pet sitting service. She is a member of the Mayflower Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club.

Presently Florence is owned by two Pembroke Welsh Corgis (Penni, a drop out from service dog school, who won the AKC ‘s ACE Award for Therapy dog in 2007, and Coach, a rescue) plus two “found in the street” cats, Maggie and Dora. She and her dogs compete in agility, rally, and obedience. Her cats compete for the food bowls and the sunniest spot on the couch.

Eighteen years ago she began to volunteer in the Education and Outreach Department of Bideawee(one of the oldest no-kill shelters), where she gave shelter tours and talks to school children about responsible pet ownership. For the past 13 years she has been involved in Bideawee’s Animal Assisted Therapy program with her two Corgis, visiting nursing homes and a school for deaf children and participating in Reading to Dogs programs in local elementary schools and libraries.

Florence is a certified evaluator for the Canine Good Citizen award. She also lectures on the history and benefits of therapy pets.
